Burung ManyarDon't set your hopes on rice alone,
But plant some sago around.
Don't set your hopes on your dream alone,
For when the morning comes, where will your dream be found?

Aim

KidneyThe country our Foundation is focused on, is Indonesia. The people for whom our Foundation works, are Indonesian people. They are kidney-patients in general for whom the Foundation BURUNG MANYAR exists, and patients with a donor kidney in particular.

What does the Foundation do?

a) the Foundation supervises a financial fund, from which immunosuppressive means are paid for patients in Indonesia with a donor kidney. To put it more simply: a lifelong medication is necessary to prevent rejection of the kidney. If not, it means returning to dialyses or worse is inevitable. There are no health insurances, or bad ones. An average teacher over there, earns 7 million Rupiah a year and will need 12 million a year only for medication. It’s a simple calculation.

b) the Foundation also tries to assist the patients with the reintegration and rehabilitation by means of correspondence and helps to find or create suitable employment.

c) the Foundation is also starting to become a centre for the collection of remnant medicine of individuals and academic hospitals, which are subsequently taken to Indonesia.

d) the Foundation is organizing a cooperation between the AMC hospital in Amsterdam and various Dutch nephritic institutions, the Medical Faculty of Universitas Gajah Mada Yogyakarta and the University hospital Dr. Sardjito.

e) at the moment the Foundation gathers material to create a nephritic patients' society/ helpdesk/service center, which, at first, will have to operate through our website, but later on, has to be rooted in the Indonesian medical circuit. Leaflets will be printed with information on diet meals, early self-diagnosis, knowledge of medicine and their side-effects, preventive measures etc. Hopefully the patients who are now receiving support from the Foundation, will be able to participate in the organization.

f) the first reconnaissance has been made to supply micro-credit to patients to pay for their transplant. Most of the time the families are already totally bankrupt by the demolishing and money devouring period of dialysis, so that the money for an operation has to be borrowed. This leads up to loans with usurious interest, which often have to be paid from new loans upon the old ones.
Their last property, usually a small piece of land, a small house of their own, becomes a guarantee. So a private home is no longer a security. A strangling spiral.

The consequences

It is essentialfor us to expand our fund, for the responsibility taken to start helping a patient, requires a lifelong-term investment. It can't be shorter than this.
Besides, in the meantime, two more new requests for help are on our waiting list. Our Foundation can only help if you help us.
We hope for your respons after having read this information on our website.
If you would like to have additional information about our Foundation or if you have important questions to ask, do not hesitate to contact us. You will receive an immediate response.
Our giro account is: 834.78.58. Stichting BURUNG MANYAR

Jan van DaalJan van Daal, chairman

Teacher at an International School of pupils from over twenty countries.
"Next to development the aid of authorities, especially aimed at large populations, I mainly see help on a small scale by private organizations as a possibility to provide help flexibly, effectively and quickly to those who need it."

JefJef Schaap, secretaris/penningmeester

Teacher at the upper levels of a large comprehensive school for secondary education.
"I have many contacts in Indonesia and I speak the language. Of course I see the need of structural help but it should not interfere with direct help to individual nephritic patients. I enjoy being active in both fields. Apart from providing material help, it is also of the utmost importance to offer assistance at social reintegration and finding one's self-esteem again."

ElsEls Standaert, projectmedewerkster

Intermediaries

According to our vision it is necessary to have intermediaries in Indonesia to maintain contact with our Foundation.
If there are difficulties of any kind, it should be a pleasant convenience for our patients to have someone nearby, they can rely on. So far these persons have been:

Burung Manyar: the name of the foundation

15 September 2003 »

The name of the Foundation BURUNG MANYAR, is taken from the title of one of the books by the Indonesian priest, architect, social worker, philosopher and author Y.B. Mangunwijaya, Burung-burung manyar. Through his office our first kidney patient came into contact with us.

Nests of the WeaverbirdIt is the Indonesian name of the weaverbird, a species of birds of which the male builds an ingenious nest for its spouse, that offers optimal security and safety. The social work of Mangunwijaya for the poorest of the poor in Yogyakarta and that of our Foundation aim at the same goal: to create a subsistence minimum security on which people can found their self-confidence and their sense of self-esteem.

Weaverbird and his nestStill a lot has to happen to reach our target and therefore Ary and the others will be very pleased with help of any kind from anybody although of course financial help is necessary for the weaverbird to build its extremely complicated nest, so that its existence will have a foundation of security and safety.
